White cane walk celebrates symbol of independence for low vision community

The local blind and low vision community took to the streets yesterday to celebrate all that white canes do to support their users and help them be active and independent.

More than 30 clients, staff, volunteers, family and friends turned out for Vision Australia Mildura’s annual International White Cane Day walk.
Wyn Edwards has been using a white cane since she was diagnosed with macular degeneration 12 years ago.
“When I lost my central vision, I knew where to go because my mother had been a client with Vision Australia,” Mrs Edwards said.
“I’ve been taking part in the white cane days almost every year since 2005.
“By and large the general public is very good and considerate of people with low vision, but these events help to create more awareness of our needs.”
Mrs Edwards said she used a short cane, which identified her as having low vision.
“It shows the public that I am vision impaired and it gives them an opportunity to dodge me,” she said.
“It also gives me some protection, especially in situations where you might be crossing the road or going through a crowded place.
“When I’m walking past tables and chairs I use my cane to work out what sort of space I’m in.”
Rhea Yazici was involved in a car accident almost five years ago that left her with permanent injuries, including vision loss.
“It was hard to accept what was going on and it took me a while to adjust to these new challenges and new ways of doing things,” Mrs Yazici said.
“I was so insecure about wearing the badge telling everyone I have low vision. But I’m learning to accept who I am now.”
Mrs Yazici said she used her white cane as a walking stick to help her get around safely and independently.
“It is part of me now, it’s like my security,” she said.
“With my injury and low vision, it gives me a lot of confidence to go out in the community.
“I’d be lost without Vision Australia because when something like this happens, you don’t know what you need.
“I’m getting on with my life with the support I get, and I’m grateful to have had that from the start.”
