Thanks to MBH volunteers

Each year, Mildura Base Hospital’s willing band of volunteers commit hundreds of hours, doing their bit to support their hospital and community.
There are more than a dozen people who provide invaluable support in various voluntary roles at MBH and their generosity was recognised at a special function recently.
Mildura Base Hospital Patient Services Manager Marcus Guthrie says volunteers provide many of the “little extras” that make a hospital stay easier for more than 20,000 patients each year.
“Our volunteers are involved in activities ranging from the newspaper trolley run through MBH each Wednesday and Friday, making hand-knitted toys for children or visiting with lonely patients,” Mr Guthrie said.
“They’re also involved with assisting in various administrative roles, providing morning tea to patients in oncology and dialysis and helping out at the headspace youth service, including with being involved with putting together Mildura’s youth magazine ‘Bold’,” he said.
“Another of our volunteers provides hand massages to patients at our day services unit. In midwifery we have volunteers who put together our patient information packs and in the children’s ward others spend time with our young patients.
“Almost every department in the hospital benefits from the contribution of volunteers.”
The hospital executive and MBH Community Advisory Board last week hosted the volunteers’ luncheon as a gesture of thanks.“Our volunteers always say they get as much back as they give from their roles, but a little bit of thanks goes a long way. They’re a wonderful group of people and we want them to know we, our patients and the community recognise their contribution,” Mr Guthrie said.
“Some of our volunteers have been helping out around the hospital for many years, but we’re excited to have welcomed several new volunteers recently – and we’d love to welcome more,” he said.
