St Joseph's College celebrates namesake

St Joseph’s College students got out of the classroom yesterday to practise the values of hard work and community.

Students ran food and activity stalls in celebration of St Joseph the Worker’s feast day, which coincides with Labour Day or May Day.
The Mercy Campus came alive with activity and colour as the college community feasted on carnival food and tried their hands at sports competitions, food eating contests and guessing games.
The celebration concluded with a Carpenter’s Classic concert, which featured a variety of music, drama and dance performances by staff and students.
St Joseph’s College Head of Middle School Fiona Pike said the annual event was held in honour of the school’s namesake.
“On this day, we acknowledge and celebrate St Joseph, who is recognised as the patron of workers by the Catholic church because he worked hard as a carpenter to provide for his family and taught Jesus how to appreciate the dignity of labour,” Ms Pike said.
“Following in his footsteps, each homeroom – made up of students from different year levels –works together to set up and run an activity or stall for the enjoyment of their peers.”
