MDAS zeroes in on Ice

Another community forum will be held next week, as concerns continue among alcohol and other drugs workers about the prevalence of the drug ice in Mildura’s Koori community.

Health workers and police are alarmed at the hold of the drug in Mildura, describing it as an epidemic.
Alcohol and other drugs counsellors from Mallee District Aboriginal Services took the lead in drawing attention to the issue with a parents and carers forum earlier this year attended by about 120 people.
The Nurse Manager of the Alcohol and Other Drugs Program at MDAS Raelene Stephens said the follow-up forum had been organised because of demand from parents and carers.
“This is not only a Koori problem, but it is a problem which is significantly affecting young Aboriginal people,” Ms Stephens said.
“The forum earlier in the year had a really good attendance and the feedback told us people received the information they were wanting.
“But people also said it was a day-time forum and that more wanted to attend, but were unable to during the day.
“This forum is in the evening, and again, the aim is for parents and carers to be able to learn about what they are looking for and where to go for help if they suspect their child or a person they know is using ice.
“People will be able to ask questions and get the information they are looking for.”
Ms Stephens said information delivered by Kathleen Orr from Odyssey House was well-received at the forum in February, and she would return for next Thursday’s event.  Simon Middleton from Mildura Police would also be a guest speaker.
The forum is at the MDAS Community Hall between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on August 15.  MDAS is offering a pick up and drop off service for Koori people, including from Buronga, Dareton and Wentworth.   Bookings for transport can be made at MDAS Reception on 5018 4102.
