Humble beginnings for prestigious ski race

When Mildura boating enthusiast Lew Burke came up with an idea to run a ski race, he had no clue the concept would build into one of the country’s most prestigious events.

“It was just something that came into my head at the time. I honestly didn't think it would take-off long term,” Burke said.
Now, 41 years later, the GTS Freight Management Mildura 100 is billed the fastest race in the world. More than $35,000 in prizes and trophies will be up for grabs this year from March 29-31.
Burke said the club captain Noel Harper jumped at his idea, but the State body wasn't all that keen.
“Anyway it got the thumbs up from the skiers because they hadn't competed on calm waters before.  They’d raced on lakes where it can get quite choppy, so I think that may have been the turning point,” he said.
