Have your say on Mallee wetlands

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 12:42:00

Community members now have the chance to have their say on how to improve priority wetlands and waterways across the Mallee.

The works will take place over the next four years at wetland near Birchip, Culgoa, Sea Lake, Ultima, Vinifera, Nyah, Wood Wood, Piangil, Haysdale, Windomil, Narrung, Iraak, Karadoc, Nichols Point, Upper Kulnine, Kulnine and Neds Corner.
The planning is being undertaken by the Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA), through funding from the Victorian Government’s Regional Riparian Action Plan.
Mallee CMA chair Sharyon Peart said the community was being asked for input to help the planning process.
“Getting people in our communities to have input is always the best first step because they are always the best-placed to provide advice on issues affecting their own area,” Ms Peart said.
“As well as identifying local concerns at wetlands, such as weeds and pests, we’re also asking community members to suggest activities or infrastructure that could resolve these issues.
“We have prepared a short online survey that will allow people to log what is happening in their local area and suggest options for improvements.”
Mallee CMA Project Officer Water Nicole Wishart said a short survey was now available as an easy way for people to log what is happening in their local areas and suggest options for improvements.
“That might be revegetation, weeding, pest animal control or upgrades to infrastructure to protect riparian land,” Ms Wishart said.
“We are open to any ideas that community members suggest but the overall aim of improvement works is to support the environmental, social, cultural and economic values that the waterways and wetlands provide to the community.”
Community members are invited to participate through a survey, which is available online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/malleemanagementplanning or in print by contacting the Mallee CMA at info@malleecma.com.au or on (03) 5051 4377.
The survey closes at 5pm on Friday 17 March 2017.
