Whether you are a recognised chef or just a home cook, let’s face it, we are all picky about our garlic.
Imagine a pizza or spaghetti Bolognese without the popular flavouring.
So it probably comes as no surprise that the Mildura region’s own garlic factory can’t keep up with consumer orders for Australian-grown product.
Australian Garlic Producers, based at Iraak, on the Murray River, is the nation’s biggest garlic producer by a large margin – and continuing to expand each year.
“We are in a delightful situation where both the consumer and supermarkets are demanding our product,” AGP’s marketing manager Ray Butcher said.
“The supermarkets get more queries from consumers about why they can’t get Australian garlic at certain times of the year than any other product,” Ray said.
“We would still have to more than double our current capacity to meet consumer demand. It’s frustrating that you can’t grow enough, but the year-by-year decision of how much to expand comes down to financials.
