AFL great bound for Mildura

Former AFL coach and champion footballer Stan Alves will be the guest speaker at the St Joseph’s College Father’s Day Breakfast.

The accomplished public and motivational speaker will visit the college on Friday 1 September to talk to the community about his experiences in football and life beyond sport.
Mr Alves, who is a patron of the Christie Centre, said he was looking forward to returning to Mildura to impart important messages about leadership, teamwork and resilience.
“Football taught me how to play the toughest game of all – and that’s life,” he said.
“Back then it was all about the accolades and how many games I’d played, but on reflection, football also taught me some fantastic lessons about life.
“Out on the field I learned about the importance of relationships, becoming a leader, and overcoming adversity – lessons that can be directly related to normal life.
“Even the hard times you go through are valuable because that’s when you find out who you really are.”
Mr Alves said he would also touch on his experiences as a son and father.
“Father’s Day is all about relationships, and that will be the underlying theme of all my stories,” he said.
St Joseph’s College Principal Marg Blythman said she inaugurated the annual Father’s Day Breakfast last year to honour and show appreciation for dads and other father figures.
“Students and staff will spend the morning with the important men in their lives – their fathers, grandfathers, uncles and caregivers,” Mrs Blythman said.
“It is an opportunity for families to connect, interact with each other, and celebrate and strengthen paternal bonds.”
Mr Alves will spend the rest of the day talking to students who are studying health and physical education.
“I want to advise them on how to take advantage of being at a wonderful school, to only to get a great education, but to help set up a foundation for the future,” he said.
